Amy Nominated for the Young Sports Personality of the Year Award 2016!

As the curtains begin to fall on a memorable year, there is one last chance to celebrate Team GB’s great success at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

On December 18, our athletes will be out in force at Birmingham’s Genting Arena for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards, celebrating an outstanding 12 months of sport.

While nominations for the main award are yet to be revealed, the shortlist for the Young Sports Personality of the Year award has been unveiled, and three members of Team GB are in the running to take home the trophy - Amy Tinkler, Ellie Downie and Rebekah Tiler.

Past winners of the award have included Andy Murray, Tom Daley, Amber Hill and Claudia Fragapane, and on December 8, the top three will be revealed live on Blue Peter before the main event.

The winner will be chosen by a panel including the likes of Rio 2016 silver medallist Lutalo Muhammad and Dina Asher-Smith, who won bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m team.

So let’s discover why our Team GB athletes are in line for this great honour.

Amy Tinkler

The youngest member of the Team GB contingent in Rio, Amy Tinkler hit the headlines at her maiden Olympic Games, becoming the first ever British female gymnast to win a medal on the floor with bronze, behind Americans Simone Biles and Alexandra Raisman.

Then 16, she became only the second British woman to win an individual artistic medal, after Beth Tweddle took uneven bars bronze at London 2012.

It capped a sterling year for Tinkler in which she retained her British floor title, clinching gold for the second successive year, as well as winning all-around, beam and floor silver at the English Championships.

Ellie Downie

Last year’s Young Sports Personality of the Year winner Ellie Downie has enjoyed yet another fantastic year, competing at her maiden Olympic Games alongside Tinkler and elder sister Becky.

In Rio, the 17-year-old finished 13th in arguably the most competitive all-around final in Olympic history, having won team, floor and vault silver at this year’s European Championships.

At the British Championships at the start of the year, she won vault gold and all-around bronze, before winning gold in all four routines at the World Challenge Cup event in Osijek.

Rebekah Tiler

As Team GB’s only female weightlifter at Rio 2016, Rebekah Tiler finished in tenth place after an impressive performance on the platform where she equalled her British clean and jerk and overall records.

In April, the 17-year-old won three bronze medal at the European Weightlifting Championships, placing third overall as well as clinching individual medals in the snatch.

She holds all three British records in the 69kg class, and won overall silver at the Youth World Championships in October.

Tinkler, Downie and Tiler are three of a ten-strong shortlist up for the award, including Paralympians Ellie Robinson, Jess Stretton, Lauren Rowles, and Tom Hamer.

Cricketer Sophie Ecclestone, rugby player Keelan Giles and footballer Georgia Stanway complete the nominees.
